Homeschooling Our Children, Unschooling Ourselves

Quotes From The Book:

Over the years, I have come to believe that anyone might experience the successes we have experienced with our children. It simply takes being open to the lives our children wish to live, and learning to trust in and nurture the inner voice that each child is born with.

Although the activities of our children, as I have described them throughout this book, indicate that neither child spent hours grappling with traditional curriculum content, each was becoming exposed quite naturally to such subjects. The difficulty was ours: we had to learn to look beyond labels to understand this. As we dissected Georgina's and Christian's experiences, we discovered that social studies, math, science, language arts, music, reading, and health could not be separated out as distinct subjects of study in our children's unschooled lives. In fact, what had been misleading us, and caused us to distrust our children's natural inclinations to learn, had been our need to apply subject matter labels to their ever-boundless learning ventures.

Comments from readers

"Congratulations on your fine - and very important - book. Is should be a staple, not just for homeschoolers, but for all teachers, and for anyone who has any interest in how children learn: mothers, caregivers, even childless retired librarians and former teachers like me. I have not had such pleasure out of a nonfiction book in years... It is so well written, so convincingly argued, your stories so truthfully and touchingly told, that at more than once point I was brought to tears."
Alaina R, Retired Reference Librarian and Teacher

"Alison McKee has given us a priceless insight into the difficult transition from a classroom-based education to the real world of [homeschool] learning.... A "must read" for any parent who wants to give his or her child one of the best gifts that homeschooling has to offer: a chance to learn how to teach yourself."
Martin & Carolyn Forte, editors, Excellence in Education
